The Project
Location: Savannah, Georgia · Project type: Residential outdoor addition
Project overview
Site Plans Online USA developed permit-focused documentation for this residential project in Savannah, Georgia. This case study discusses the design constraints, site conditions and construction drawings prepared from actual project records.
The project challenge
Designing a new 30 × 13-foot wood-framed lean-to covered porch at an existing two-story residence while addressing roof connections, support on existing patio concrete and wind/uplift detailing.
How the drawings addressed the project
Existing site and proposed layout
The site plan identified the proposed 390 SF porch in relation to the residence and property boundaries.
Structural design coordination
Structural drawings documented 6×6 wood posts, built-up beams, 2×10 rafters at 16 inches on center and ledger attachment to the existing home.
Roof and weather protection
The porch roof was detailed with a 3:12 mono-slope, roof sheathing, weatherproofing, flashing and related fastening.
Connections and load path
Post bases and connectors formed part of the continuous load-path documentation; the existing concrete condition and anchorage suitability required field verification.
Permit-review documentation
A Georgia-registered professional engineer digitally signed and sealed the seven-sheet package.

Why this matters for similar projects
Accurate property placement, documented framing, site conditions, construction connections and jurisdiction-specific requirements help owners, contractors and reviewers evaluate the proposed scope. No drawing package alone guarantees municipal approval, and concealed conditions may need inspection or verification before construction.
Frequently asked questions
Can a covered porch attach to an existing house?
It may, if structural framing and a suitable load path can be verified and detailed.
Will existing concrete support porch posts?
An existing patio slab is not automatically adequate; thickness, reinforcement, condition and anchor loads must be reviewed.
Does every porch require a PE stamp?
No. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and project configuration; professional sealing requires licensed independent review.
