What Is a PE Stamp and What Does It Actually Mean?.
A PE stamp also called a PE seal or engineer’s seal is the official certification mark of a licensed Professional Engineer.
When a PE stamps your drawings, it means four things:
- The engineer has personally reviewed the drawings
- The engineer confirms the drawings meet applicable building codes
- The engineer accepts professional responsibility for the engineering content
- The drawings carry the PE’s signature, seal, license number, and date
The Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE) governs all PE stamps in Florida. Florida PE licenses must be renewed annually and expire on February 28. Our PE is current, active, and FBPE-registered.
Out-of-state PE stamps are not accepted by Florida building departments. The PE must hold an active Florida license. This is the most common reason stamped drawings get rejected in Florida — wrong state’s PE.

HVHZ Projects — What Changes in Miami-Dade and Broward
Miami-Dade and Broward counties are designated High-Velocity Hurricane Zones — the only two in the United States. HVHZ changes the PE stamp requirements beyond the standard Florida requirements:
For all HVHZ permits
- PE stamp is mandatory on all commercial permits (same as all of Florida)
- PE stamp is required on all structural residential work (broader than most FL counties)
- PE stamp may be required on certain residential MEP work depending on the city
For HVHZ materials
- PE stamp alone is not sufficient — materials must also have Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance (NOA)

What Changed in 2026 — Florida PE Stamp Rules
Florida Building Code 8th Edition (in effect 2026)
The 8th Edition adopted ASCE 7-22, the updated wind load standard. This means PE-stamped structural drawings must now reference ASCE 7-22 specifically not the prior ASCE 7-16. Drawings stamped under the previous edition may not be accepted for new permit applications.
Florida HB 803 (effective July 1, 2026)
HB 803 expanded the role of private providers in building permit review. A PE serving as a private provider can now perform plan review functions previously handled by local building departments. This does not change PE stamp requirements — it creates a new optional pathway for faster permit review through licensed private providers.
FBPE license renewal
Florida PE licenses renew annually and expire February 28. If your PE's license expired and was not renewed before you submit for permit, the stamp is invalid. We maintain current, active PE licenses — verified annually.

A PE stamp means a licensed Professional Engineer has personally reviewed your drawings and certifies they meet applicable engineering standards and building codes. It does not guarantee permit approval the building department may still have comments on zoning, ADA, or other non-engineering matters. Can an out-of-state PE stamp drawings for a Florida permit?

Do I need a PE stamp for a residential pool in Florida?
For most Florida counties no. A non-certified site plan is sufficient for residential pool permits. The exception is the City of Naples, which requires engineer-sealed structural pool drawings. Miami-Dade and Broward (HVHZ) may require PE stamp on certain pool features. We confirm your specific project’s requirements before you order.
