What Is a Digital PE Stamp?

A digital PE stamp (electronic PE seal) is the digital equivalent of a physical rubber stamp + wet ink signature applied to a PDF document.

A valid digital PE stamp consists of:

The visual seal — the PE’s circular state seal, name, license number, discipline, and state, applied as a digital image to the PDF.

The digital signature — a cryptographically secure signature embedded in the PDF file. This is what makes the document legally valid. It is not just an image — it uses certificate-based digital signing that:

• Uniquely identifies the signer
• Proves the document has not been modified since signing
• Is traceable and verifiable

What a valid digital PE stamp is NOT: Simply pasting an image of a PE seal onto a PDF without a proper digital signature. This is visually indistinguishable from a real digital stamp to the untrained eye — but it has no legal validity and constitutes fraudulent engineering practice. All digital stamps we coordinate include properly authenticated digital signatures.

Is a Digital PE Stamp Legally Valid?

Yes — in all 50 US states, when properly executed.

Every state engineering board in the United States has adopted rules permitting electronic PE seals. The key requirement is that the electronic seal must:

1. Be unique to the individual engineer
2. Be applied under the engineer’s direct control
3. Include the same information required on a physical seal
4. Be protected so that any alteration after signing is detectable

How Our Digital PE Stamp Process Works

Step 1: We prepare or review your drawings.

Step 2: The licensed PE reviews the documents for engineering accuracy and code compliance.

Step 3: The PE applies a digitally secured seal using certificate-based digital signing software (Adobe Acrobat with certificate-based signatures, DocuSign, or equivalent).

Step 4: The signed PDF is delivered. The document shows:

• Visual PE seal with all required elements
• PE’s name and digital signature
• Date of signing
• Digital certificate information embedded in the PDF

Step 5: You upload the signed PDF to your building department portal.

When a Wet Stamp Is Still Required

Most modern portals accept digital stamps. However, wet stamps (physical rubber stamp + handwritten signature) may still be required for:

• Some legacy building departments that haven’t updated their submission systems
• Certain state or federal agency submissions
• Projects where the jurisdiction explicitly requires “original wet-signed and sealed drawings”
• Legal documents where original signatures are required by statute
